The Intercultural Management Summer School (IMSS)

From February 16th until February 29th, 2020, the International Business Department at Rajamangala University of Technology Phra Nakhon welcomed 20 students and 2 professors from the International Management Department of Fachhochschule Wuerzburg-Schweinfurt to the first FHWS-RMUTP Intercultural Management Summer School.

The Intercultural Management Summer School (IMSS) is a joint academic project of Rajamangala University of Technology Phra Nakhon (RMUTP) and the University of Applied Sciences Wuerzburg-Schweinfurt (FHWS).

This extraordinary event gave international students from Thailand, Bhutan, China, and Germany the chance to practice intercultural group work and get an inside view into applied international management practices. Accompanied by lectures and everyday social events, the students learned how to deal with the different cultures.

Visiting famous cultural monuments like the King’s Palace, Wat Pho, or the old Siamese capital Ayutthaya gave the German students an even greater insight into Thai culture. In addition to that, the guests from Europe had the chance to train Muay Thai and cook Thai food. All this provided the Germans with an inside view of Thai culture.

The academic part of the Intercultural Management Summer School corresponded to the module ‘Business Management’ of the English taught Bachelor Programme International Management at FHWS. It reflected a complete module with 6 ECTS or three Thai graduate credits. The credits were fully transferable for Thai and FHWS students.

Besides the intercultural and academic part, students joined company visits and discussions with professionals. These experiences allowed students to transfer theory into practice.

As a special event, students had the chance to discover the famous Thai beaches on a field trip to the island Koh Samet. In Kho Samet, the students had enough time to recover from the lectures and experience the relaxed beach life.

They also joined Thai boxing program in leisure activities. Thai Boxing or Muay Thai is the national sport and cultural martial art of Thailand. It was developed several hundreds of years ago as a form of close-combat that utilizes the entire body as a weapon.
